I just loved this book! I realize that it was probably written more as a reference book, but I read it straight through as you would a novel. It made understanding what happened in the New Testament much more interesting. Some of the events in Christ's time I really did not have a deep knowledge about. Why did they do what they did? This book answered all of those questions and many others that I did not even know about. Very insightful and informative. The photos and maps enhanced the book and added to the ability to actually feel like you were there. I liked hearing about the authors experiences at the different sites and what they saw and personally learned while they were there. I have got to say that I enjoyed the book immensely! It was worth every penny I paid for it. After reading it I have purchased all but one of the other volumes and have been reading through them also.
I absolutely loved this book. Even though it is a reference guide I read it straight through. I loved the insights and the depth it offered. I especially loved the diagram of the ancient temple mount. Having recently returned from Israel, this book helped fill my desires to know more about the New Testament.
After reading this book, I placed it next to my "Jesus the Christ". Every member who wants a better understanding of Christ and His life should read this book.
My husband and I bought this a year ago in an attempt to better understand the social and political climate of Jesus' day. Often times, I felt confused and lost on some of the parables, etc that are mentioned in the NT and was looking for a good study companion. We have truly enjoyed this book and we both have used it in our sacrament talks. Sometimes the authors go into a little too much depth, but for the most part they do an outstanding job of bringing that era to life. Their knowledge of ancient Hebrew and correct word translation have brought out many neat things that I never before realized. I definately recommend this book.
